Welcome to another exciting school year at Herndon High School! Take a look at this newsletter so you can become informed about important changes at school as we approach your first day. We look forward to seeing you on August 28th! Welcome back, Hornet Family!

FCPS releases student schedules on Tuesday, August 22nd through SIS StudentVUE and ParentVUE. Please use your SIS StudentVUE or ParentVUE account access to obtain your schedule. Please note, freshmen and new students receive a copy of their schedule at Freshmen and New Student Orientation on Friday, August 25th.

Herndon High School News You Choose Messages

Our regular News You Choose messages are sent to the community each Monday and our Hornet Highlights are usually sent on Wednesdays. This is a great way to understand what is happening at school. If you are not a returning HHS parent, please make sure you enroll in the system so you receive our News You Choose messages. This can be done on the FCPS homepage (www.fcps.edu). Scroll all the way to the bottom and click on the “Sign Up Now” button in the yellow banner that states “Stay updated with what's happening at FCPS with News You Choose.”

Free and Reduced-Priced Meals

Applications are mailed to all households each August and must be renewed each year. Once the application is reviewed by Food and Nutrition, you will receive a letter in the mail detailing your free or reduced lunch status. PLEASE KEEP THE LETTER! It is the only copy that is printed and cannot be reproduced. Students MUST ALWAYS PRESENT THIS LETTER TO RECEIVE FREE OR REDUCED FEES.

PE Information

Having a PE uniform is mandatory in Physical Education class. If you need a uniform, please talk with your PE teacher. The cost is $20. Tenth grade students will have two quarters of Physical Education - one quarter of health and one quarter of driver’s education.

Student Attendance

Herndon High School student hours are 8:10am – 2:55pm. Whether you drive, walk, or ride, you must be in your classroom by 8:10am. The warning bell rings at 8:05am. To report an excused absence (illness, appointment, death in family, etc.), a parent/guardian must call the attendance line at 703.810.2282 and leave a message.


With Renovation kicking off around the beginning of December, many moves have already taken place. Most notably, 46 trailers have been stocked with boxes belonging to almost half of our teaching staff. We’re calling this village “The Hornet’s Nest.” An additional trailer was also added to house a teacher workroom, conference room, security office, and our APEX program. You can find this trailer directly across from the restroom trailer near the stadium entrance.

The Black Office has been relocated to the Main Office, with administrative assistants Mrs. Manraj and Mrs. Russell working side-by-side. Assistant Principals Mrs. Maria Sneed and Mrs. Amanda Hudson can be found in the main office as well. Finance Tech, Mrs. Cathy Liebenstein has moved to our SOSA, Mrs. Laura Totoro’s office at the intersection near Door 11. And finally, Mrs. Totoro can be found in a newly designed office inside the Cafeteria. Check it out – it’s pretty amazing what our Design and Construction department can do! Mrs. Fatima Mejia will be working in the newly constructed Attendance Office inside the Main Office, but Mrs. Dina Hocker can still be found in the Red Office upstairs. Take a tour on Monday during the Eclipse Party or when school starts!

We Have a New Website

Herndon High School launched its new website this summer. This is part of a larger FCPS initiative to move all schools to a more accessible format. Special thanks to Stephanie Stewart for the many, many hours she poured into this project. You can see the site at https://herndonhs.fcps.edu/

Stinger Time and TA

The Stinger Time rotation has been finalized after several iterations this summer. Based on discussions throughout the year, the new rotation is TA/1, 2/3, 5/6, 7/8. There will be no Stinger movement until September 24th and movement will be halted for the month of May. In addition, our TA lessons include modifications based on student input to create more practical experiences. Students will see opportunities to build a resume, complete personal taxes, and more.


The code “NTI” will continue to be used in ParentVUE and StudentVUE for assignments not turned in. And “Ab” still stands for “Absent”. Teachers abide by the 50% floor unless a reasonable attempt is not made to complete the assignment. In that situation, a zero will be awarded.
