Events Yearbooks For Sale!

Our yearbook is finished and off to the printing press – secure yours while they are still available! Head over to yearbookordercenter.com to purchase the 2025 yearbook. Our school code is 8967. Books start at $65. Prices go up to $80 on May 1.Students receiving free/reduced lunch can pick up an order form in the main office to purchase a yearbook at a reduced cost.

Quarter End, Eid al-Fitr, and Student Holiday

Friday, March 28, is the last day of the third quarter. It is a full day of school for students.

All FCPS schools and offices are closed on Monday, March 31, for Eid al-Fitr. Tuesday, April 1, is a student holiday and teacher workday. See the complete school year calendar.

Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience. National Arab American Heritage Month

FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

⏰ Coming Soon: School Start Times Survey

Last year, FCPS held community forums and surveyed middle school families regarding middle school start times. Now, we would like to hear from all staff and families on the possibility of adjusting school start times across the division. The goal remains to begin middle school at 8 a.m. or later at the start of the 2026-27 school year.

On April 1, a survey link will be sent by email to staff, parents/caregivers, and students in grades 5-12. The confidential survey will be open for two weeks and will be available in multiple languages.

DMV Permit Testing at Herndon High School

Herndon High School also offers DMV Permit Testing for all eligible students that are 15 and 6 months old who would like to obtain their permit. Students must be registered through FCPS ACE (FCPS ACE Herndon Permit Test Registration ) the DMV Website (DMV Permit Test Registration ). Please be sure to register on BOTH websites. The test will be administered in room J104 at 3:15pm.

The permit test will be held on the following dates:

National Assistant Principals Week

Join NASSP, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, and the American Federation of School Administrators in honoring the enormous contributions of assistant principals to student success.

National Assistant Principals Week, April 7–11, 2025, is a celebration of the unsung heroes in our education system. These dedicated folks work tirelessly to bolster teachers, motivate students, support their principal, create a positive learning community, and face the many unpredictable challenges that land on their desk.

Assistant Principals play a crucial role, and this week is a dedicated time to recognize them for their hard work and commitment to our schools, students, and profession. Please join us in celebrating these incredible school leaders!

Purple Up! Day

To show our support for all our military-connected families, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on April 9 for military children. Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue.

Junior Parent College Night

Junior Parent College Night for Herndon HS and South Lakes HS will be April 10th at 6:30pm in the Herndon HS Auditorium at 700 Bennett Street, Herndon, VA.

Our 2025 panel consists of college admissions representatives from Northern Virginia Community College, University of Virginia, Christopher Newport University, University of Tennessee, George Mason University, and Marymount University.

SOL Spring 2025 Test Information

Herndon High School students will be taking one or more Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course (EOC) assessments between April 29 and May 30, 2025. All students will receive their testing schedule and other important information via school e-mail in the middle of April 2025. All testing times will start at 8:10 am. All SOL assessments are taken in-person at school. If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in your student missing a testing day, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

Federal law requires schools to provide students in grades 9-12 one SOL test in Reading, Mathematics, and Science. These assessments provide information about student achievement to the parent/guardian, school, division, and state.

State law requires students to verify credits to fulfill Standard and Advanced Studies diploma graduation requirements, as outlined on the Graduation Requirements and Course Planning webpage. SOL tests are the most common way students earn the verified credits they need. However, performance assessments (social studies only) or substitute assessments approved by the Virginia Board of Education may be another option available for your student to verify certain credits.

In most cases, SOL assessment results are available in the Student Information System (SIS) ParentVUE within about three months. If you have questions about SOL testing, please contact your student’s school counselor or our Assessment Coach, Dr. Karl Gussow.

Pyramid Art Show

Fine arts students will be displaying their work at the Pyramid Art Show at Herndon United Methodist Church, 701 Bennett Street, Herndon, VA beginning beginning, Friday, May 2, 2025. The work displayed will feature some outstanding creations by students in our Fine Arts courses. There will be a reception from 7:00-9:00 pm to celebrate their awesomeness.

Partners for Safe Teen Driving Presentation

The final Partners for Safe Teen Driving Presentation will be held on May 7, 2025 at 6:00 pm sharp. Please arrive by 5:45 in the Herndon High School Auditorium.

"Partners for Safe Teen Driving" presentation is a crucial component of the teen driver education process in Virginia. This is a 90-minute parent-teen traffic safety presentation. It is designed to increase awareness of driving risks and promote safe driving habits. Attendance at the Partners for Safe Teen Driving presentation is mandatory for students completing driver education in Virginia.

The Driver Education Certificate of Completion (DEC-District 8), often referred to as the "pink card," is issued after a student successfully completes both the classroom driver education and the Partners for Safe Teen Driving presentation. This card is essential for progressing to the next steps in the licensing process.

After students obtain their DEC 8 card, they may then register for the “in car” driving component of the licensing process through by registering through FCPS ACE Behind the Wheel classes or a commercial driving school. Flyer is available here.

☀️ Save the Date for the FCPS Summer Extravaganza

Discover summer learning and activities available in Fairfax County!

Attend the FCPS Summer Extravaganza on Saturday, May 10, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at Woodson High School and get a jump on summer learning. At this free event, participants can engage in educational and enrichment activities designed to inspire curiosity and growth.

Art club got into the recycle, reuse motto! We used recycled glass jars and gave them new life as plant containers!

Information AP Testing Volunteers

We Need You!

We are looking for volunteers for AP Testing from Monday, May 5th – Friday, May 16th.

Responsibilities would include:

Proctor exams (In some cases, lead proctor)
Distribute and collect exam materials
Help monitor the testing room
Exams last approximately 3-4 hours
Two time frames that we need coverage: 7:30am – 11:45am and 11:30am – 4pm

Ramadan
We are happy to welcome students celebrating Ramadan. The library offers a place to come pray or simply a place to hang out during lunch that isn’t the cafeteria. All students are welcome in the library!
Research Help
The librarians are offering research help during Stingers. If any students need help completing their research, encourage them to use Securly to write an eHall Pass to Library Help, we’ll be ready for them when they arrive. Of course, they are always welcome, and we are always willing to help. See hours above.
Literary Hat Trick
Encourage your students to participate in our March Literary Hat Trick Challenge. Stop by and fill out a pledge to read 3 of any similar texts, (3 books in a series, 3 picture books, 3 poems, 3 Virginia Reader’s Choice books, you get the idea). We’re offering a treat for completion during the month of March

Astronomy Students Create Lunar Surfaces

This week in Astronomy, students created our own lunar surface by simulating the late heavy bombardment. Students chose objects of different densities and dropped them from different heights in a kiddy pool of flour and cocoa powder. They took measurements and made calculations about meteorite impact craters.

Hall of Fame

The Herndon High School Sports Hall of Fame is back up and accepting nominations!

In order to be considered for the Herndon Athletic Hall of Fame an application must be submitted. If you know of somebody you wish to be considered, please have them fill out this form or you can fill it out on their behalf. It is important that you provide their contact information and as much information as possible regarding their athletic accomplishments in high school, college, and professional athletics as well as any civic or professional awards they may have received.

Eligibility criteria:

A former Herndon coach or athletic support person who has retired
A Herndon athlete that graduated at least 10 years ago
A nominee must receive 70% of the HOF Committee's votes to gain election
A nominee's form will remain active for 5 years (if they don't get voted in).
After 5 years, another form will have to be submitted

College/Post-Secondary Night Scholarship Winner

Wednesday, March 19th Herndon held it's first College/Post-Secondary Night for sophomore and junior students and families. Jason Puryear of ECMC The College Place and Lauren McGregor of George Mason University presented on: Why education beyond high school is important, Options for after high school, Benefits of further education, Costs of different options, Choosing, researching, comparing your options, Paying for college or post-secondary education (FAFSA and Scholarships), Getting organized. For attending the event, Merly Guzman Argumedo won a $1000 scholarship toward her post-secondary plans. Congratulations Merly!

Plating Desserts in Nutrition & Wellness

Students in Nutrition and Wellness learned the importance of plating food and how it plays a major role in enjoying the food we eat. They explored basic techniques for plating food as well.

Herndon Art Teacher Featured

In a recent interview with the Visual Art Journal, Rebecca Ogun, Herndon High School Art Teacher, discusses how her grandmother's oil paintings and family traditions in fiber arts ignited her passion for art. Her work often features vibrant floral still lifes, symbolizing cherished memories and the transient beauty of life. Ogun's use of diverse mediums—such as watercolor, oil, and colored pencils—allows her to explore various textures and fluidity, enhancing the natural beauty of her subjects. As a high school art teacher, she balances her professional art career with her role as an educator, drawing inspiration from her students' creativity.

VCU & Mary Washington College Visit

On March 20th, the College Partnership Program embarked on a dual-campus visit to Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Mary Washington, trading textbooks for firsthand experience. Information AP Testing Volunteers

We Need You!

We are looking for volunteers for AP Testing from Monday, May 5th – Friday, May 16th.

Responsibilities would include:

Proctor exams (In some cases, lead proctor)
Distribute and collect exam materials
Help monitor the testing room
Exams last approximately 3-4 hours
Two time frames that we need coverage: 7:30am – 11:45am and 11:30am – 4pm

Next Steps in the Budget Process

The next steps in the FCPS FY 2026 Budget process include the School Board presenting the budget to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, April 22. The Board of Supervisors will then conduct public hearings Tuesday, April 22, through Thursday, April 24. Community members can submit testimony or sign up to speak.

Talking with teens about the facts of fentanyl is a conversation you can’t skip. Learning about fentanyl gives teens a better understanding of the risks and effects of the drug.

Share these important facts with your child:

Even half a fentanyl-laced pill can be fatal. Just a few salt-sized grains of fentanyl are enough to cause an overdose.
More than half of local street pills contain a deadly dose of fentanyl. As of 2023, seven in 10 counterfeit pills in the U.S. contain enough fentanyl to cause a fatal overdose.
Fentanyl is usually taken accidentally. Many people have no idea they’ve taken it until they overdose because you can’t see, smell, or taste it in pills and powders.
Overdose can happen in an instant. In as little as four minutes, the lack of oxygen can lead to brain damage and even death.

Eligibility criteria:

A former Herndon coach or athletic support person who has retired
A Herndon athlete that graduated at least 10 years ago
A nominee must receive 70% of the HOF Committee's votes to gain election
A nominee's form will remain active for 5 years (if they don't get voted in).
After 5 years, another form will have to be submitted

Virginia History Day Region 5 Competition

Congratulations to Zain and Isaac for taking 1st place in the Group Exhibit at the Virginia History Day Region 5 competition! The title of their exhibit is "The Truman Doctrine and the Responsibility of the U.S.A. to Defend Global Democracy." They will represent HHS and region 5 at the Virginia History Day on April 27th in Richmond.

Softball Tag Day/Green Up Day

The softball team's Tag Day/Green Up Day was a resounding success! Armed with bright smiles the team fanned out across the community, collecting donations. Their energetic spirit was infectious, and residents responded generously, both financially and with enthusiastic support. By the end of the day, the team had raised significant funds for new equipment and fostered a stronger sense of community pride. The virtual Tag Day site will be active through April 30th. Every little bit helps!

Celebrating St. Patrick's Day

The Social Studies Department at Herndon HS celebrated St. Patrick's Day in style! The teachers were decked out in green, ready to share their love of Irish culture with their students. They were sporting everything from shamrock pins to full-on green outfits. The teachers had a blast, and the students loved it too. It was a great way to build school spirit and celebrate a fun holiday.

We wanted to take a moment to share with you how Herndon High School is supporting students who choose to observe Ramadan this year (3/3/25-3/28/25).

During the school year, students have access to the Meditation and Silent Reflection room located in the Student Activities Office (room J100).

To accommodate the increased number of students needing to access the Meditation and Silent Reflection room during Ramadan, the following changes will take place in March.

As in previous years, students are allowed to come to the library for a quiet space during their assigned lunch time. Students can use their school agenda to get a library stamp from a lunch monitor posted by door 14 or they can stop by the main office to get a pass for the month.
During the month of March, students can hold their individual or group prayer in the library as well (in the Odyssey and/or Belpre’ room). Again, students can stop by the main office to get a pass for the month.

Ramadan requires prayers to take place within certain times, and the times are based on the position of the Sun. Prayer Times (the one that falls during school hours is called “Dhuhr”)

During the weeks of 3/10/15 – 3/21/25 the prayer that takes place during school hours has to happen between 1:20 pm and 1:30 pm (after D lunch and into 7/8th pd.) due to Daylight Saving Time.
During the week of 3/24/25 – 3/28/25 the prayer that takes place during school hours has to happen between 1:15 pm and 1:30 pm (just before the end of D lunch and into 7/8th pd.).

Following FCPS Regulation 1502, “Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students to miss instructional time on a regular basis.” Parent/caregiver, please complete the following Form if you wish to request this accommodation for your student during the month of March. We thank you for your support!

Events Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener

The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 9-12 during the week of March 17th. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. College Access Fairfax will hold two sessions on financial aid hosted by the lead financial educator and military benefits liaison from the Navy Mutual Aid Association.

FCPS Budget — Our Students Deserve the Best

More than $240 million of FCPS’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Advertised Budget is dedicated to increasing compensation for our teachers and staff to stay competitive and reduce turnover. Currently, FCPS ranks fifth out of eight neighboring districts in regards to starting salary for teachers with a master’s degree.

Our families expect — and our students deserve — the best teachers.

🛑 Cameras Installed on School Bus Stop Arms

Cameras have been installed on the stop arms of 50 FCPS school buses. These cameras will be used to identify drivers who pass stopped school buses while children are entering and exiting the bus (called a “stop arm violation”).

Warnings for drivers will begin on Wednesday, April 9. After a 30-day warning period, citations will begin to be issued on Monday, May 12.

According to Virginia law, drivers must stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights on and their stop signs extended. Motorists should stop when approaching from any direction (unless there is a barrier or median separating their lane from where the bus is stopped). They should remain stopped until everyone is clear and the bus is moving.

We appreciate our law enforcement partners for working with us to improve road safety and reduce accidents. Read more information about the stop arm cameras and all of the ways that we work with our county partners to keep students safe on their way to and from school.

Herndon Welcomer Program

Students in Ms. Fuentes' ML Leadership class and students in the Herndon Welcomer Program partnered to host students who are new to HHS. We had pizza and played games. This luncheon occurs every month to welcome new students.

Resources Reminder to Sign Up Weekly for Student Fasting Meal

Students who are fasting during the school day between now and March 28 can take school meal kits home at the end of the day. Families must fill out a separate request form for each week and for each student in order to receive school meal kits. To receive meal kits for the week of March 24, please fill out this form by March 17.

Please remind your child to pick up their meals each day at our school’s designated location. Visit the Food and Nutrition Services webpage for more information, including weekly request forms and deadlines.

This year the varsity girls soccer team is awarding a special shirt to players that exemplify the way we want to play, which is to be fiercely competitive. This was Miranda's first game as a varsity player and not only did she earn a start, but she set the example with her determination throughout the game against Chantilly.

Max Fitzmorris *Varsity Boys Tennis

Brand new to the team, Max has joined us with full enthusiasm. He stood his ground this week playing our top player and showed us that he's ready to rise up in the ranks over the next few years.

Eligibility criteria:

A former Herndon coach or athletic support person who has retired
A Herndon athlete that graduated at least 10 years ago
A nominee must receive 70% of the HOF Committee's votes to gain election
A nominee's form will remain active for 5 years (if they don't get voted in).
After 5 years, another form will have to be submitted

Real Food for Kids Cooking Competition

Over the weekend, our talented students participated in the Real Food for Kids cooking competition on Saturday, March 10th, and emerged victorious! Our culinary team impressed the judges with a delicious menu featuring Gnocchi Stew, Garlic Bread sticks, and a fresh salad made with romaine lettuce, clementines, dried cranberries, and feta cheese, all topped with a delightful balsamic vinegar dressing. Their hard work, creativity, and culinary skills truly shone and brought home the win for Herndon High!

Be sure to keep an eye out later this week for their interview on NBC4, where they will share their experience and insights from the competition. Additionally, the winning menu will be featured as a school lunch in the near future—more details to come!

Congratulations to our amazing students- Winnie O’Hanlon, Clarissa Dante, Syeda Fazeen Rizvi and Sidney Ide for their dedication and success. Let's celebrate their achievement and continue to support their culinary journey.

French Student Virtually Visit the National Gallery of Art

Our French 5/AP students are diving into the world of French art with a virtual field trip to the National Gallery of Art! Through inquiry-based discussions, they're exploring the theme of Beauty and Art, as part of the AP French curriculum.

Student Peace Award

Clarissa Dantes was named Herndon High School's Student Peace Award winner. The Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County began in 2006 as a way to encourage people to think more about peace as both a means and an end, and to recognize young people who work as peacemakers. Every year, the high schools in Fairfax County are asked to select one junior or senior, or a group of students, whose work has promoted peace. The project is organized by volunteers and funded by donations from 15 secular and religious sponsoring organizations.

Clarissa Dantes joined with her friend Sidney Ide to establish the Asian American Club at Herndon High School to assist other students feeling alone and disconnected from their heritage. They meet regularly for activities that help them learn about the many different Asian cultures.

The club’s main goal is to provide opportunities for bonding, acceptance, and mutual support among Asian American students. The club has created a safe space where students can feel included and have positive, candid, and constructive conversations.

Black History Month Celebration

Herndon's First Annual African American Read-In Day was held on Friday, February 14, 2025. Established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English, African American Read-In Day encourages communities to read together, focusing on books by and about African Americans. This initiative helps make literacy a central part of Black History Month. Additionally, members of our local and business community joined our students for readings and table talks.

Events Celebrating Arts in Our Schools

March has also been designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®), the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages.

Theatre In Our Schools (TIOS) is a celebration of theatre in our schools and schools in our theatres. Sponsored by the American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE) and the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA), the goals of TIOS are to raise public awareness of the impact of theatre education and draw attention to the need for more access to quality programs in and out of school for all students. While TIOS presentations and advocacy may happen anytime in schools, theatres, and other public spaces, AATE and EdTA will recognize and promote March as the official Theatre In Our Schools month.

2025 Family Summit - Beyond Labels: Nurturing a Culture of Belonging! (an Extension of the Special Education Conference)

Families, educators, and community members are invited to the 2025 FCPS Family Summit: Beyond Labels: Nurturing a Culture of Belonging. Fairfax County Public Schools will be hosting the free, in-person event in collaboration with valued community partners. The summit will be held Saturday, March 15, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at South Lakes High School.

This event will feature:

Opening Session: Julie Causton and Kristie Pretti-Frontczak — best-selling authors, motivational speakers, and advocates for inclusion — will share practical tools and evidence-based strategies to empower and assist all families, with a special emphasis on parents of students with individual education programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans.
Breakout Sessions: Learn more about special education and global topics that benefit all families.

Student Showcase: FCPS students will share their efforts in fostering inclusivity through posters, essays, videos, songs, art, and other mediums.

Friday, March 28, is the last day of the third quarter. It is a full day of school for students.

Black History Month Celebration

Cultural Day was held on Thursday, February 27, 2025. Staff members celebrated their heritage by wearing culturally representative attire. This day was to promote cultural appreciation, global awareness, inclusivity, heritage preservation, and provides a form of academic enrichment for students.

Black History Month Celebration

Herndon Black History Month celebration included daily Black History announcements delivered by students in English and Spanish, black history posters displayed throughout the building, Herndon's First Annual African American Read-In Day, Herndon's First Discovery Summit featured Black History trivia and a screening of "Remember the Titans," Cultural Day, and culminated in a delicious catered luncheon by our very own Chef Smith and the NJROTC Sous Chefs.

Resources Preparing for Tough Conversations With Teens

Discussing tough topics like fentanyl and other drugs can feel challenging — no matter how close you are with your child. Explain to your teen that it’s important to learn about fentanyl so they know what to do if a friend overdoses. Prepare in advance with the tips below:

Set the stage. Choose a casual environment that’s free from distractions. Talk while driving, taking a walk, or doing chores together.
Make it a two-way discussion. Ask open-ended questions.
Stay patient and reserve judgment.
Check in with your child early and often.

Herndon HS Winter Guard "Warriors" Show

The Herndon High School Winter Color Guard have been true road warriors this season. Having worked on the technique and competition show entitled "Warriors" since November, their efforts have paid off at the first two competitions of the year. At Forest Park HS on 2/1 and Tuscarora HS on 2/8, the Guard placed 3rd out of 8 competing schools.

Under the direction of instructors Gracie Smith, Antares Leask, Sarah Mister, and Salvatore Boenzi, the winter guard is reaching new heights this season. The competition season continues in March with shows at Sherando HS on 3/15, Mt. Vernon HS on 3/22, and concludes with their championships at Hampton Coliseum on 3/29. Go get 'em Guard!

Early Childhood Careers

Students are engaged in an art project based on lesson plans they designed for their Early Childhood Careers class. They apply creative teaching strategies to craft hands-on activities suitable for young learners, blending artistic expression with early childhood education principles.

All-Virginia Choir

Congrats to students Henry Waldrop and Cara Ethington! Henry was chosen as first chair representative to All-Virginia Choir representing District XII. Cara was chosen as 2nd alternate. Go Hornets!!

Our very own Isabel Silvestre have been named the Herndon Pyramid Outstanding Operational Employee and Dana VanSlyke has been named the Herndon Pyramid Outstanding Leader. Events National Women’s History Month

Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. Read more about Women’s History Month in National Geographic Kids.

National School Social Work Week

March 2-8 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Herndon has two amazing social workers, Dianna Sosa and Cynthia Ramirez! We are so fortunate to have them working with our students and families.

📋Academic Advising and Course Selection

Academic advising and course selection is coming to an end! Starting in January and through mid March, students will meet individually with their teachers and school counselor to discuss and choose their courses for the 2025-26 school year. It is so important that parents and students are informed of their academic options. Families are encouraged to talk with current teachers for their feedback for next school year. Just like last year, students will choose classes via their SIS Student accounts. After the students choose their courses via their accounts, they will meet with their school counselor to confirm the selections.

It is important for students to choose a course load that will challenge them and help prepare them for their post-secondary endeavors while also allowing for balance with their extracurricular and personal commitments. We take academic advising and course selection seriously and encourage students to base their choices on their strengths and interests and with their plans for life after high school in mind.

All of our academic advising and course selection information is available on the Herndon HS > Student Services > Course Selection webpage and a few are listed below.

After March 14: No course request changes will be permitted.

Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward)

Sunday, March 9, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Pleasure Reading. Snow days make great reading days! Encourage your students to curl up with a hot cocoa and a good book after shoveling the sidewalk. There may be more weather on the horizon, but I there is still time to come check out some reading material. If the West Entrance of the library (near the Tech Offices) is unlocked and a member of the library staff is present, students may come in. Your student can check with us if they would like to stay later than the posted hours: we are often open longer.

🚀 Prepare for a Summer of Learning and Fun

Registration is open or will be available soon for summer camps and learning opportunities offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students.

Career and Technical Education and Institute for the Arts Summer Camps

Career and Technical Education camps and Institute for the Arts camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools. Registration begins for these programs on Monday, March 10, and ends Friday, June 6.

Earn Credit Toward Graduation This Summer

Take advantage of the opportunity to earn a high school course credit via this summer’s online campus program. Registration is now open. Students must register by Friday, June 6. Mathematics, health and physical education, career and technical education, English, science, social studies, and world language courses are available to eligible middle and high school students.

Summer is a great time for high school students to fulfill the Economics and Personal Finance course requirement. This is a self-directed course where students work independently. The course is available between Monday, June 23, and Friday, July 25. Registration is now open. Students must register by Friday, May 23. For more information, visit this Summer Learning page.

Eating Disorder Parent Information

The Code of Virginia, 22.1-273.2 requires schools provide, on an annual basis, parents/guardians educational information regarding eating disorders for students in grades five through twelve.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023), Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives. There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources to be provided to parents and guardians of Fairfax County Public Schools. This information may be found at Eating Disorders.

📖 Supporting Academic Growth and Reading on Level by Third Grade

The FCPS Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Advertised Budget invests in academic growth and excellence for each and every student, which is one of the priorities of the FCPS Strategic Plan.

Across FCPS, teachers, staff, parents, and even older students are invested in helping our youngest learners grow their love of reading from a strong foundation.

The goal is for students to move from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” by the end of the third grade. Reading on grade level is connected to other Strategic Plan goals, including completing advanced coursework and graduating on time.

Last fall, FCPS introduced a new reading curriculum that aligns with evidence-based literacy instruction. Between fall and winter, reading screener results show more than a 4% increase in the number of students in kindergarten to third grade approaching or meeting expectations. Similarly, 3.4% more third graders demonstrate strong foundations of reading and 8.4% more third graders are mastering grade-level standards.

Athletes of The Week

Congratulations to the following athletes for earning AOTW for the week of February 10th!

Danny Saunders *Swim

Danny broke HHS 20 year old yard 100 yard breaststroke record at the Regional Swim Tournament. Danny 200 IM, 100 BR. He will be advancing to States, where he could improve his personal best/record.

Evelyn Cherry * Track & Field

Evelyn’s performance at this past week’s Regional Championship on February 13th showcased her athleticism and her versatility.

Evelyn ‘s performance in the Long Jump was 16’-7.5” placing 4th at Regionals.

Her Triple Jump was 33’ placing 7th at Regionals.

And Evelyn’s main event the Pole Vault she vaulted 9’-6” placing 3rd overall and qualifying for the VHSL State Group 6 meet.

These 3 events were all on the same day and she even qualified in the 55H for Regionals, but decided not to compete in that event to focus on her field events.

The Herndon High School Sports Hall of Fame is back up and accepting nominations!

Eligibility criteria:

A former Herndon coach or athletic support person who has retired
A Herndon athlete that graduated at least 10 years ago
A nominee must receive 70% of the HOF Committee's votes to gain election
A nominee's form will remain active for 5 years (if they don't get voted in).
After 5 years, another form will have to be submitted

On February 19 & 20, 2025, Herndon held it’s first learning conference called the Discovery Summit. Students explored new subjects, dove deeper into their learning, received targeted academic support, recharged their battery, and developed important career and life skills.

Events 📋Academic Advising and Course Selection

Academic advising and course selection begins soon! Starting this month, students will meet individually with their teachers and school counselor to discuss and choose their courses for the 2025-26 school year. It is so important that parents and students are informed of their academic options. Families are encouraged to talk with current teachers for their feedback for next school year. Just like last year, students will choose classes via their SIS Student accounts. After the students choose their courses via their accounts, they will meet with their school counselor to confirm the selections.

📝 Application for the 2025 Student Representative to the School Board

The School Board student representative represents the interests of Fairfax County Public Schools students. The student representative is not a member of the School Board but serves in a nonvoting, advisory capacity. Students currently in grades 9, 10, and 11 are eligible to apply.

Application Information and Deadlines

To be considered for the election, students are required to provide:

A written component, which is due Monday, February 24.
A 30-second candidate video statement, which is due Wednesday, March 26. Candidates will be emailed a link to record their video on Monday, March 17.

Public Schools Week

Public Schools Week is an annual celebration that brings together school leaders, educators, parents & community leaders to recognize the importance of our nation’s public schools.

Ramadan

Ramadan begins at sundown on Friday, February 28. This day is an evening-only observance day. There is school on these days, but certain activities that cannot be made up can not take place after school. See the complete school year calendar.Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact their child’s principal regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

Pleasure Reading. Snow days make great reading days! Encourage your students to curl up with a hot cocoa and a good book after shoveling the sidewalk. There may be more weather on the horizon, but I there is still time to come check out some reading material. If the West Entrance of the library (near the Tech Offices) is unlocked and a member of the library staff is present, students may come in. Your student can check with us if they would like to stay later than the posted hours: we are often open longer.

Research Help. The librarians are offering research help during Stingers. 📐 Breaking Down the Budget: Supporting Academic Growth and Algebra by Eighth Grade

The FCPS Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget invests in academic growth and excellence for each and every student, which is one of the priorities of the FCPS Strategic Plan.

Since the 2023-24 school year, FCPS has seen a 9.5% increase in eighth graders taking Algebra I or more advanced math and a 6.8% increase in fifth graders in advanced math.

Studies show that students who complete algebra in middle school have more opportunities to take advanced math and science courses in high school. This can open up new academic paths for students! Watch a video that shows why eighth grade algebra matters.

Resources Become Unskippable: Practical Guidance for Talking With Teens About Fentanyl

FCPS is partnering with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra learning resources. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors’ services at no cost, including weekly live online classes; on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring; essay editing; and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests. 💻 Hazel Health: Virtual Therapy for High School Students

Teletherapy services are available for all FCPS high school students at no cost. Sessions can be scheduled Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Hazel Health’s highly qualified therapists specialize in working with teens. Learn more on FCPS’ teletherapy webpage.

Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28

Thanks to a new program from the Virginia Department of Education, students who are fasting during the school day between February 28 and March 28 can now take school meal kits home at the end of the day.Families will need to fill out a weekly Fasting Meals Request Form for their child or children to receive school meal kits. A separate form must be filled out for each week and each student.To receive meal kits for Friday, February 28, and the week of March 3, please submit the first request form by Monday, February 24.
